Raw Milk Symposium - Summary

Two hundred and fifty participants flocked from 26 states and four countries to attend the 2nd Annual International Raw Milk Symposium in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, April 10, 2010. They included farmers, consumers, politicians, attorneys, professors, physicians, nutritionists, researchers, nurses, activists, authors, economists and UW students.

Although invited to attend free of charge, senior members of these organizations ignored the invitation (without the courtesy of a response) except for one gracious DATCP Board Member, who requested a copy of the proceedings. Those invited included Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection; Departments of Public Health and Departments of Animal Health from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio; Wisconsin Dairy Council; Wisconsin Farm Bureau; Wisconsin State Senate Committee on Higher Education and Agriculture, Wisconsin State Assembly Committee on Rural Economic Development and Wisconsin State Assembly Committee on Agriculture. The appointed members of the Wisconsin Raw Milk Policy Working Group were also invited, and three farmer members attended.

The symposium was hailed as a success, even though ironically, raw milk, raw butter, raw cream could not be served.  Four filmmakers and seven media representatives attended, and so the message of the conference will be widely distributed, long after the microphones were turned off.

A surprisingly large number of farmers attended, as April is calving season, and a challenging time to leave the farm. Participants came from all corners of the USA to attend. The speakers, were well chosen, and while some covered basic information, others broke new ground and there was something for everyone to take away.

Many participants were touched at the palpable passion in the room when Michael Schmidt, who has been fighting for his rights in the Canadian courts for over a decade,  spoke these words from the heart "This is war on farmers". In the same afternoon, they left emotion far behind and delved into the dispassionate research presented by Dr. Ted Beals, a retired pathologist and Prof. Dr. Ton Baars, a scientist from Kassel University in Germany who discovered healing benefits of raw milk while researching on an unrelated topic.

Dr. Sylvia Onusic's presentation was widely applauded, as she outlined the amazingly free access Europeans have to raw milk, and widespread support for the small farming community. For some, it was like visiting another world, in which health departments and elected officials attended grand openings of sidewalk raw milk vending machines without any media trumpeting a health official or veterinarian saying "Drinking Raw Milk is Like Playing Russian Roulette with Your Health". Participants were stunned by the disparity in the respect and treatment of raw milk farmers and consumers in Europe and the USA.

A local fare lunch was provided for the participant, featuring hearty organic turkey and wild rice soup, salad, Castle Rock Dairy's churned grassfed cream, and grassfed icecream with berry and nut toppings.

Sally Fallon Morell delved into the many reasons why raw milk is a perfect vehicle for optimum nutrition, based on the comprehensive research of Dr. Weston A. Price while Elizabeth Gamsky Rich explored the legal standings of private vs. public sales.

The panel discussion featured key players in the raw milk movement, as they shared, from their perspective, how to join forces in the food rights battle.

Immediately following the symposium, everyone gathered at a raw cheese reception, featuring cheeses from Wisconsin's Next Generation Organic Dairy, Grazin' Acres and Castle Rock Dairy as well as cave aged cheese from Ohio's Canal Junction Farmstead Cheese.

In the evening, at the FundRAISER dinner, Mark McAfee delivered an inspired view into his strategy to reach and teach consumers, while delivering, millions of gallons of safely, cleanly produced raw milk for retail sale in California. Donors dined on delicious Wisconsin Duck and Cherry Terrine, Grassfed Beef Bourguignonne and Honey Marscapone Cheesecake made with flavor-filled Canadian Raw Honey donated by Tropical Traditions. Some lucky folks were happy to discover they won door prizes - bottles of donated Preston Vineyard Organic Wines.

The evening was ended on a very sobering note, as over 150 viewers attended the first sneak preview of Farmageddon. Held late in the evening after a long day of symposium proceedings, the audience watched raptly, and unbelievingly as Kristin Canty's film chronicled the farm-after-farm-after-farm destruction meted out by local, state and federal agencies.

The film was the perfect call to action - underscoring the reason for day's gathering. Exercising consumer rights is only an option, if there continue to be large, growing community of small farms. Claiming consumer rights must include protecting our small farm community.

Raw Milk Symposium - Participant Comments

It was a GREAT symposium with enlightened, intelligent, articulate speakers with incredible and undeniable collective experience from around the world: scholars, consumers, farmers, doctors, pathologists, nutritionists, professors, authors, publicists, attorneys, etc.
Onward & upward!
